David Watson: Thank you so much. Glad to be here.

Rick: Glad to have you, David. Maybe we jump right in. We don’t waste any time today. What about starting with the basics—what’s the big idea behind Attorney Shield? And if you were explaining this to a friend over coffee, how would you describe what you do?

David Watson: I’d explain it this way. You’re driving around and you don’t know you’re being followed by a police officer. At some point, lights behind you—how does that make you feel? A lot of people get a tight chest. Nobody wants to be accosted by the law. And a lot of times in those situations, people don’t really know what to say or do.

In the United States, we are heavily policed, at least in my opinion. What we do is give you peace of mind. We do that by providing a mobile app that gives you instant access to legal counsel. You can register for a recurring membership, and once enrolled, you tap a button, select your incident type—traffic stop, auto accident, domestic situation, or other—and within seconds you’re connected with a licensed attorney who helps you navigate that situation.

Most people don’t know what to say or what not to say. Self-incrimination is very common. We solve that problem. Also, the U.S. ranks 94th in access to legal care. Most people can’t afford an attorney. So we’re reshaping how people access legal support.

Rick: That’s amazing. Thanks for the intro. It’s such a delicate subject and you explained it very clearly. I’ve seen videos of police stops online—it’s stressful even to watch. I’d be anxious about saying the wrong thing. Having something like this would give real peace of mind.

So what’s the key problem you’re solving with this app?

David Watson: We see ourselves as consumer protection. People have identity protection, insurance for assets, homes, vehicles. They pay a small fee in advance to protect against future risk. This is similar.

The problem is access to legal services is underserved. Traditional attorneys require appointments, consultation fees, retainers—often thousands of dollars. Most people can’t afford that.

About 32% of people go without legal help when they need it. We’re creating emergency and preventative legal support. Would you rather have an attorney in the moment to avoid charges or deal with consequences afterward at a higher cost? Most people would choose the first.

Rick: Makes total sense. It’s like having someone with you 24/7 when needed.

David Watson: Exactly. We have preventative healthcare, dental care—but not preventative legal support. That’s where we come in.

Rick: How do people discover you? What channels work best?

David Watson: We’re a startup, so capital is limited. We haven’t spent much on ads. Most growth has come from social media—especially YouTube.

Our sessions are recorded (with permission), and members allow us to share them for education. That’s been powerful. We grew from 900 to 16,500 YouTube subscribers in a year.

These real-life examples show how Attorney Shield helps. For instance, in one case, police tried to enter a home without a warrant. The attorney intervened, and they left. That kind of advocacy is far more effective than individuals trying to argue their rights.

Rick: That’s a great point. The attorney has authority.

David Watson: Exactly. They’re doing their job, just like the officer.

Rick: What role does your website play?

David Watson: It’s critical. It’s your main hub for education and conversion. We’ve redesigned ours at least five times. You constantly iterate and improve messaging.

If you’re not evolving your website, it becomes stale. You want visitors to spend more time there—that increases conversion. It’s the top of your funnel.

Rick: Well said. Let’s switch gears. What does a typical day look like for you?

David Watson: It’s evolved. Today I focus on three main things:

  1. Vision – setting priorities and direction so the team knows what to execute.
  2. Sales – both direct-to-consumer and partnerships (like insurance companies bundling our service).
  3. Fundraising – which is the most exhausting. We’ve done multiple rounds, and each investor wants a different narrative.

Rick: Sounds intense.

David Watson: It is—but I’m still smiling.

Rick: That’s what matters. Let’s do a quick rapid-fire.

When consuming content—watching, reading, or listening?

David Watson: Reading.

Rick: Last thing you read?

David Watson: A book on manifestation and quantum physics.

Rick: That already gives me a headache—but fascinating. If you had a magic wand to fix one thing in marketing?

David Watson: Knowing exactly who your ideal customer is. Targeting is improving, but there’s no perfect solution yet. Understanding behavior and intent is still the biggest challenge.

Rick: Totally agree. If you could give advice to your past self?

David Watson: I actually do that often. I tell myself: hang in there. I also thank my past self.

I think it’s important to communicate with yourself across time. Imagine your future as clearly as you remember your past—and act accordingly.

Rick: That’s powerful. Feels like a whole podcast on its own.

David Watson: Definitely.

Rick: Last question—what should people remember about your work?

David Watson: We serve the underserved. And we won’t stop there. Once you solve one problem, you look for others close to your capabilities and continue helping.

Rick: Love that. Where can people find you?

David Watson: attorneybutton.com (redirects to attorneyshield.com). Everything is there.

Rick: Amazing. Thanks for your time, David.

David Watson: Thank you.

Rick: Bye everyone.
